Please note: Each piece is entirely hand-formed. Dimensions, shape, and surface texture will vary between individual pieces.

Crafted by Fumito Abe of Kamoshika Kiln in Ajigasawa, Aomori, this cup is formed from raw clay body saturated with ki-urushi — raw, unprocessed lacquer applied directly to unglazed stoneware — and then fired at high temperature. The surface reads like bare earth: warm terracotta tones shifting through amber and rust, rough to the eye yet smooth where it matters most — at the lip, in the hand.

Ki-urushi does not announce itself. It begins quietly, and it grows. With use, the surface slowly deepens in color and develops a subtle luster. Every pour, every wash, every meal leaves its trace. This is a cup that becomes more itself over time — a quality the Japanese call 育つ (sodatsu): to grow, to be raised.

Hold it in both hands. Feel the weight of the clay, the texture of the surface, the slight asymmetry that only a hand-formed object carries. This is not a cup that performs. It simply is — and gradually becomes more so.

Because each piece is hand-formed and individually fired, no two are identical. Slight variations in shape, surface texture, and tone are not imperfections — they are the record of the maker's hands and the kiln's fire.
