What's Next for TokiTsugu

What's Next for TokiTsugu

TokiTsugu is growing. Beyond our current offerings, we're actively expanding our artisan network, deepening our engagement with Japan's ceramic regions, and preparing to introduce work from emerging voices in contemporary craftsmanship. This is the beginning of an exciting journey.

Meet Our Next Artisans

We're thrilled to announce our first two featured artisans. Both represent exactly what TokiTsugu stands for: exceptional skill, bold artistic vision, and a commitment to hand-made excellence.

Kie Sakai

Kasama Ware, Ibaraki Prefecture

Kie Sakai's work is contemporary art expressed through ceramics. Her practice centers on LGBTQ+ symbolism and pride flags—exploring themes of identity, visibility, and cultural celebration through fired clay. Her pieces are highly artistic, visually striking, and conceptually rich.

Each work is hand-crafted. Subtle variations in glaze, form, and surface texture are intentional—no two pieces are identical. This uniqueness is a signature of authenticity and the maker's hand.

Sakai's work transforms ceramic vessels into statements. They're meant to be seen, contemplated, and treasured.

Fumito Abe

Suzu Ware, Ishikawa Prefecture

Fumito Abe works in Suzu ceramics, a tradition defined by unglazed, raw clay bodies. Rather than relying on glaze color, Abe's pieces showcase the natural beauty of the clay itself—earthy, textured, and deeply expressive. Many of his works are further refined with urushi lacquer, which is then fired, adding layers of depth and sophistication.

His aesthetic is understated yet powerful. Abe's pieces are built for aging—each mark, stain, and patina layer tells the story of years in use. The longer you live with a piece, the more it becomes yours.

Abe's work embodies restraint, strength, and time. These are pieces that improve with age, that reward patient, daily use.

A note on handmade authenticity: Both artisans work entirely by hand. Because of this, subtle variations in firing, glaze interaction, and form are inevitable and valued—they're evidence of the maker's direct involvement. No two pieces are exactly alike. This is not a flaw; it's a feature.

Expanding Our Reach: Japan's Ceramic Regions

Our expansion doesn't stop with these two voices. We're actively building relationships with artisans across Japan's most celebrated ceramic traditions. Our commitment is to work with creators who demonstrate:

  • Deep regional knowledge: Understanding the specific clay, techniques, and aesthetic traditions of their locale
  • Artistic integrity: A clear vision and the skill to execute it consistently
  • Commitment to craft: A willingness to prioritize quality over volume

Regions we're actively exploring:

  • Karatsu Ware — Saga Prefecture. Known for rustic charm and spontaneous ash glazes.
  • Tamba Ware — Hyogo Prefecture. Celebrated for bold forms and rich, natural glazing.
  • Shigaraki Ware — Shiga Prefecture. Famous for its distinctive clay and earthy, sculptural forms.

Each region carries centuries of accumulated knowledge. Our role is to connect that heritage with global collectors, restaurants, and institutions that value it.

Beyond Standard Offerings: Custom Work & Your Requests

One of TokiTsugu's core strengths is our ability to broker custom commissions. Most artisans are reluctant to take custom orders directly—they're protective of their practice, cautious about external demands, and often overwhelmed by inquiries.

We bridge that gap. If you have a specific vision—a bespoke dining set, a sculptural installation, a commissioned piece for your restaurant or home—let us know. We'll handle the conversation, manage expectations, navigate logistics, and help bring your idea to life.

Have a Request?

Whether you're looking for specific ceramics, interested in custom commissions, or have suggestions for artisans we should meet—we're listening. Get in touch. Let's build something together.

The Road Ahead

This is just the beginning. TokiTsugu's mission is to expand the global understanding of Japanese craft—not as museum pieces, but as living, breathing, aging companions. We're building a platform for emerging voices, deepening traditions, and collectors who understand that real value lies in durability, authenticity, and the unmistakable mark of human hands.

Thank you for being part of this journey. We can't wait to share what's coming next.
